Oh, indeed. Southern California English speakers unite around the vowel
in "good"*, which is not [U] but [U_)] (if that is the symbol for unrounded).
[U_)] is to [U] as [I] is to [Y]. And I don't think it plays any
significant role in any language on Earth--there certainly is not IPA symbol
for it, which I find apalling! But that's okay; it's all
gooooooooooooooooooood. ;)
