Yes. The Irish family names, at least the Gaelic ones, are the first names of
some famous personage from the family. So Daniel O Connell is Daniel
(decended) from Connell.
Mc' and Mac of course means son of.
And for a more obscure point, Names that end in 'igan' as in Flanigan, means
someone was a grandson. Flanigan= Grandson of Flan.
