It's actually a coincidence. Believe it or not, when I wanted a
prefix that, when added to a word, would turn it into a question-word,
I decided upon /we/ pronounced just as it looks in IPA
(or like "way" in English) with no further thought.
Some of the other combinatory words in rtemmu are:
tis = time
rtun = person
rbihn = reason
ris = location
adding "we-" would result in:
wetis = ( = /we-tis/, not /wet-is/ ) = when?
wertun ( = /we-rtun/, not /wer-tun/) = who?
werbihn (= /we-rbihn/, not /wer-bihn/ ) = why?
and of course:
weris = where? and pronounced /we-ris/ .
In each case, the boundary between the prefix and the
following word is also a syllable boundary in pronounciation.
Thanks, though, for spotting it, Dan. It makes for a great
mnemonic for remembering it! :-)
BTW, some other combinatory prefixes in rtemmu are:
r`ko (= /Rko/) = every
g~am (= /Nam/ ) = none
thus:
r`kotis = every time
r`kortun = everybody
r`korbihn= for every reason
r`koris = everywhere
g~amtis = never
g~amrtun = nobody
g~amrbihn = for no reason
g~amris = nowhere
