Primary Object and Secondary Object
Primary object is the patient of a monotransitive verb or the recipient
of a ditransitive verb, while secondary object is the patient of a
ditransitive verb.
Arguably, English follows this pattern, at least in passivization
I gave John the book -> John was given the book (Primary object, John,
promoted to subject)
I gave the book to John -> The book was given to John (primary object,
book, promoted to subject)
I gave John the book -> *The book was given John (Secondary object
promoted to subject)
