Well.... in the context the poem uses it, most english speakers know
exactly what it means, but they would never use it that way themselves
even if they were speaking really formally. We use "to need" as a verb,
but we no longer use "needs" as an adverb... its the kind of word we
only expect to hear in shakespeare plays etc.
