I'm not sure what you mean. I went to public schools, and I can read well beyond the 6th grade level...but whenever I encountered such a thing as "must needs" I always just thought it was an unneeded addition to 'must', with no extra meaning. It seemed pretty dumb to me, whenever reading Moby Dick or the like. I'd never use it in my speech...and only yesterday while writing the poem did I look it up, since I had written it without thinking, and wanted to be sure I had it right.
