Islam did spread the same way--just in different geographic
directions. The reason it didn't stick in Spain is because the
Muslim leadership of Iberia had rather different domestic policies
than those in Egypt or the Levant. Likewise, the situation of
Christianity in Iberia was different from the East, making it easier
for the Christians of Iberia to continue identifying themselves with
other Christians outside Muslim rule.
