I have a continent whose original monotheistic inhabitants were repressed
for centuries by an polytheistic theocracy, similar in some ways to the
Aztecs, descended from a wave of later immigrants. The Theocracy was in
turn conquered and suppressed by a worldwide empire, which itself collapsed
two generations later. In the languages spoken by the original inhabitants,
names of the Theocracy's gods have acquired perjorative meanings- for
example, the name of the fertility goddess now means "harlot", the name of
the war god means "murderer", etc.
