Same here. In fact, I CANNOT pronounce any kind of approximate /r/,
except those that use the back of the tongue, after /T/. It always
comes out as a tap, unless I put in a schwa. "Three", for instance, is
[Tri] ([r] = alv. tap). The only way I can get [r\`] (retroflex
approximate) is if I say [T@r\`i], with a very short [@].
