Well, protolangs for Watakassí were, for the most part, minority
languages within larger communities. For example, Proto-Kassi-Plia was
spoken in a region where Sanle (actually a relative) was the dominant
language. Thus, most of the speakers were bilingual, however, they kept
mostly to themselves, which kept their language alive. But, there were
strong influences, for instance, large numbers of borrowings, and the
introduction of new phonemes. Also, the transition from a base-6 to a
base-12 system (the old base-6 still shows up in the word for 7,
literally 6-1). Quite probably the development of cases and genders was
due to that as well.
