Diachronic linguistics readings

Does anyone have any recommendations for books or papers which
explain in detail the diachronic development of specific languages
(in any of its aspects)? I'd especially like ones where the end
result language is (IMO) radically different from the original one,
e.g. ergative from accusative, polysynthetic from isolating (OK, that
might be too much of a stretch to actually find!). I'm also
especially interested in the development of nonlinear/
nonconcatenating (e.g. Semitic root/pattern) morphology, infixation,
and vowel harmony out of a language which previously didn't have them.
