Hallo!
I can heartily recommend these two books:
Lyle Campbell, _Historical Linguistics_
Benjamin W. Fortson IV, _Indo-European Language and Culture_
The former is the best of the various historical linguistics textbooks
I have read so far. The other book is of course specifically about
Indo-European; it gives excellent insight into the inner workings of
this family and contains lots of potential inspiration for building your
own family.
