In fact, I think it's less of a Christian thing than a commercial
thing (in modern days, I mean). When I was a youth minister and
Sunday School teacher, I tried to teach children about the
historical person, named Saint Nicholas, who was bishop of Smyrna
and who set an example of unselfish giving (and who would probably
be appauled at the "commerical cult" that has grown up around a
legend that's only loosely related to the historical fact).
