Hence the "usually". Old Icelandic (I don't know about
present day Icelandic) also had it "reversed". Some
of the stems had an _-r_ suffix in the nominative, but
were unmarked in the accusative.
Schoolbook example:
(a-stem, masc. _armr_ 'arm')
NOM armr
GEN arms
DAT armi
ACC arm
And I'm pretty sure Old Icelandic is nominative, though
it does display some quirky case marking. :)
