Strangely enough [4] and [r`] share a row in the IPA chart
is spite of the fact that [4] is always a tap and [r`] is
always a flap. While I can make an alveolar flap I'm sure
I cann't make a retroflex tap, since a tap is by definition
apical, and a retroflex is by definition sublaminal!
I suggest introducing a 'trill' diacritic -- the best choice
would certainly be [_r] but it is taken --, since Unicode contains
a raised _r_ which is not kosher IPA anyway. Perhaps [_`] in
spite of its ugliness could be a workable sign, since it will
be required darn seldom anyway.
And I really ought to get my CXS-to-Unicode converter
updated and published.
So much to do, so short the time...
(Wasn't that an Old English proverb?
