I don't like changing the standard once it's been made, even if it's only
used by just a handful of people... But I guess that's why I'll put it to
a vote and let you wash my hands of the evil unless someone else wants to
take over the maintainence of the chart :)

[r\`] already *is* the retroflex approximant.* In kosher X-SAMPA, [r`] is
for whatever reason a retroflex tap or flap (i.e. retroflex [4]). Your
proposal would involve (a) creating a new symbol [4`] for retroflex tap or
flap and (b) redefining [r`] as a symbol for which there is no IPA
equilavent. My above disclaimers apply. If people (looks at Andreas who
has suggested *so* many changes) want too many changes, I would suggest
creating a new ASCII-IPA that fixes up as many people's problems as
possible and wondering if it gets accepted...
* But note that I've seen Americans using both [r`] and [r\] as shorthands
for [r\`].
