I didn't find out there were *other* conlangers: I came across one, namely
Tolkien, before I was one myself.

I imagine I first encountered the term on Elfling (a mailing list devoted to
Tolkien's languages), which I in turn found by googling* for Tolkeniana. But I
do not see learning the word as particularly significant.
I was introduced to the CONLANG list by a fellow elflinger after I mentioned I
was developing my own language.
* Well, technically I suppose I was altavistaing ... Google didn't exist back
then.
