Been trying to figure out what it was for me, and I think I've realized
it--at least where I came from, a "snowstorm" is any generally violent
collocation[1] of snow; it doesnt become a "blizzard" without leaving
substantial deposits of snow on the ground (at least six or eight inches,
say--yes, it didnt snow much where I grew up, but we had a blizzard about
ten years ago).

[1] I know that's not the right word but it just _sounds_ perfect there.
