Re: Cantonal spelling, take 3

erm... no offense... but as a native speaker of cantonese i think i
should finally say something: The 3 takes look horrible. Don't EVER
combine 2 words together... it's not done in cantonese, or chinese for
that matter... there is no break in speech between terms nor there is a
break when it's written.

i'm all for using IPA. simply use the whatever convention you use to
represent IPA symbols and put the tone number behind it. there is no
need to indicate vowel length, as it is not a factor in cantonese.

just name tones 1-9, 1-6 are the basic ones and 7-9 are the chopped
tones with p, t, k closing consonants.

toN1 = soup
toN2 = candy
toN3 = to iron
toN4 = sugar
kœy5 = he, she, it
gœy6 = gigantic
tik7 = check mark
lit8 = crack
lip9 = to hunt

i'm no expert on ipa symbols conventions but these are what i've been
using: N for ng, o for backward c (no confusion there, since there is
no "o" sound in cantonese... the are all backward "c").

i'll post a complete list of cantonese sound symbols later on...
