The GRE is the "Graduate Record Exam" and the MAT
I don't know the meaining of, but seems to be
another test of some sort. A "score" on a test is
an expression of how good (or bad) one did on the
test, expressed in some sort of fraction, usually
of 100 - i.e., a percentage.
As an aside, I don't recall how the GRE figures
it's scoring; but most college exams in the US
are scored on a 100% scale: A (the best) = 90 -
100%; B = 80 - 89%; C = 70 - 79% etc. From this
point, many professors "curve" the grades which
means that the passing grade is moved up or down
the absolute scale depending on how difficult the
test was or how stupid their students are. I've
done chemistry exams where it was possible to
_pass_ the test with only a score of 5% or so
correct.
