Yep, and IIRC the only possible things that can happen to a string is that
a string gets split in two, or two strings merge in one, IIRC. Basically,
String Theory replaces zero-dimensional particles with one-dimensional ones.

Moreover, String Theory necessitates the Universe to have many more
dimensions than the 4 ones we know about (10, 11 or 26 dimensions are
necessary for the theory to be internally consistent). We don't experience
the remaining dimensions because they are somehow "shrinked" to subatomic
sizes, but at times of a few nanoseconds after the Big Bang those
dimensions were just as large as the ones we know about, and strings could
roam through them all. Those remaining dimensions (small but not
zero-sized) could be the ethereal plane you're talking about.

A simple introduction to Superstring Theory:

I once read a book about it that gave a good image of what it is, while
still being scientifically correct, but I can't remember its title :( ...

You need a straight mind to invent a twisted conlang.
