That's why i prefaced the whole names issue by saying "I guess i'm just
snobbish about this."  I dunno, i've heard many people pronounce Iraq
as [Ir\Ak] ("ih-rock"), which is also made up of good American English
sounds.

Eh, it's probably just an aesthetics thing, and/or a snobby elitist
"i'm an amateur linguist and you're not, pbthpt!" thing :-P
