It's not "more like [a]". It's as pure a [a] as you can make it. Since I do
know the difference between [a] and [A], I am very definite in its
position. It's certainly extremely fronted.

Well, the standard certainly has [a] as main realisation of /a/. I can
easily check it by putting the TV on the Italian channel we receive here
:)) . The people there make plenty of [a]'s, but I never hear a single [A].
