I'm back, but for short, and with bad news :(

Hi everyone,
As you see, I'm back. It won't last long as we're leaving next Thursday
afternoon for a two-week holiday in the Jura (in France :) ). Naturally, I
won't have an Internet connection nor time or a computer to use it, so I'll
have to go nomail again within two days. But I thought I'd enjoy the list a
bit more before leaving :) .
The bit of bad news is something else, though. I've unfortunately
discovered that since the 1st of May 2004, Free has changed its FTP
uploading system for non-paying accounts like mine. Basically, it means
that only those who *actually* use Free for their connection on Internet
can upload to their websites. In short, it means I cannot give Free
accounts anymore. I'm a bit upset, because six months ago they were still
advertising about their unlimited number of accounts offer, boasting about
anyone being able to give everyone accounts, whether those people used Free
or not. But things are as they are and cannot change. And I cannot take a
paid Free account as I have no way to use it (not living in France anymore).
So far, the limitation seems only to affect accounts created after the 1st
of May. Older accounts seem to work properly (the ones I use do at least).
I don't know if they plan on changing that or not, so I advise anyone using
a Free account I gave them to keep an up-to-date local copy of their
website, in case they would lose access to their current site. I don't see
that coming anytime soon (Free is probably aware of the uproar it would
cause) but better be safe than sorry :) . And in any case, this limitation
doesn't affect mail.
Sorry for the bad news, but it's in the best interest of everyone to keep
you informed.
Christophe Grandsire.
