The Japanese use surname first, and use surnames a lot more than the West, but I don't know the situation in other surname first cultures, so I can't say if Japan is typical or atypical. At any rate, my suspicion is that there's no direct connection. ObConculture: The Kassi place family names after given names, but, at least in classical times, never used family name alone, except to address the head of the family, since she represented the family. -- "There's no such thing as 'cool'.
