Well, no, you could just create fictional wars over the land or something.
Anything is possible. Your creations don't necessarily have to be in the
same "now"; One culture in a place could be during a certain "ancient"
time, then another in that same place at a later time (think of the middle
east!).
I don't think it would be reasonable to get malat into this universe, since
it's a totally regular, and thus a little unnatural. Besides I have no
ideas on where it would be put, and why there'd be a perfectly regular
language.
Good luck on this alternate universe, sounds pretty cool to me!
