Well, off course the whole thing with colors is, that there are a infinite number of hues on the visible spectrum, and it is just a matter of taste or convenience in how much colors they are split up. Fot everyday purposes, six or seven is about enough, but for more specific things, people need more accurate classifications. Someone who works with colors often (painter, fashion designer) will hoave a better eye for differences in color. To me, for instance, there is a huge difference between sky blue and dark blue, and I am still frustrated for not having seperate words for it. We do have pink and lilac to go with red, why not something to go with blue? Which colors do have a name in a languageis a matter of history. I can imagine that the original colors in a language were given to colors of things you saw often (green grass, brown trees, red blood etc.). Shades that were more rare became classified with one of the existing colors. So ones perception of color would depend on cultural and personal experience. It would be interesting, for that matter, to see what kind of color names Inuit have, compared to, say, some african jungle tribe, seeing that they live in quite different environments, colorwise.
