This is truly sad. His "History of Basque" is such a sound, level-headed
work of scholarship (and yes, very well written), in a field that is all too
often the victim of just the opposite.
I always had the feeling I'd met him somewhere along the way, but apparently
it was only by reputation or imagination.....  I thought it could have been
at the Univ. of Michigan, but I  checked his CV, and he was never anywhere
near the place.
