I haven't checked to see if your various links get into the history of this, but-- In the olden days (up to maybe 1950s), it was customary to use a little "blueiing" solution in your white laundry. For some reason it made the whites look whiter. Elderly white-haired women (perhaps mostly in the provinces, where sophisticated salons were rare) took to using the same stuff in their shampoo. The right amount did indeed make the hair look whiter. But sometimes they used a bit too much, hence, Blue Hair. My dear departed grandmother (1875-1963) was prone to do this.............. We whities (even us guys) no longer have to guess how much to use-- there are Wonder Shampoos that have just the right amount of blue in them. It's FAAABulous. And you young whippershappers will get there too, someday. :-))))))
