"Brunette" spelt that way is only used to apply to women, but as far as I
know means not just 'with brown hair' but with dark hair of any shade. I've
never ever heard of 'blue hair' at all (speaking as someone with a few grey
hairs myself!). Also, the term 'blond' is hardly ever used for men, the
usual term being 'fair-haired'.
I'd guess that the feminine slant in these terms is purely for
historical/cultural reasons.
