Spelled Aad in the source I saw. But yes, Aard in my post was contamination from -garden, I know it wasn't that when I spoke to the librarian. (Cf. Irina's explanation. I'd guess that in A-dri-an /a/ is in an open syllable and can ne spelt <a> --- while in Aad, it's in a closed syllable and must be spelt <aa>).
