I used to correspond with someone at the University of Newcastle (can't
remember which one it was: you Aussies will obviously know though) who was a
lecturer in the classics department. She was a linguist called Dr. Rhona
Beare (who I think figures in some of JRRT's letters) so maybe that
Newcastle is sort of "intellectual", hence the Latinization of the name.
Mind you, I can't see too many British-Newcastle dwellers calling themselves
Novocvastrians!
