I can't speak for John, but for me "the team are" is as ungrammatical as
"the man are"

Buffalo yes, antelope, I wouldn't say "the antelope are", but it's not
completely ungrammatical for me; wildebeest, I think so. I'm not
entirely sure, tho. It's not exactly a common word. :-)
