I can't conceive of the films of, say, Truffaut or Eric Rohmer
being such a delight if the prosody did not flutter papilionine
with the sweet levity of choux and millefeuilles. Thanks to
the delections of French cinema I at the age of fifteen could
not conceive of love being conducted in any language but French.
(Of course, I could not actually speak French, but in my
imagination I did, and it was there, after all, that I conducted
my amours.)
