Assonance is just vowels. Alliteration is just consonants. (Neither have
the same strict rules as rhyming though, so 'black ban' could be said to
be both alliterating and assonating[1] though it does neither[2] as well
as 'big book' alliterates or 'big kipper' assonates.)
[1]: I think I've just borrowed a word from Latin.
[2]: In your dialect it may assonate perfectly. It doesn't it mine. But
it does, whereas 'dad' and 'bad' don't even rhyme in mine.
