Caveat: while NS and IE support _much_ of the PNG format, they don't support _all_ of it; IE doesn't have any support in its Mac and Win3.1 versions, netscape lacks gamma correction, and transparency is limited in both (not present at all in NS, and binary in IE). That probably means it's good enough to be usable until the browsers catch up, but I thought I'd mention it.

Also, the GIMP is very nice if you're on a unixy system (and I think it runs on Win* as well?)

That very much depends on the type of the image. If an image is e.g. a photograph, with lots of gradients, then jpg makes sense; but if it is more geometric or discrete, then gif or png would definitely be much better.
