If you're correct, and I think you may be, then you just demonstrated
the difference between spelling and speaking.  I have absolutely no
difficulty understanding British (at least RP and Near-RP dialects),
Canadian, Australian, or Jamaican English, yet a phonemic spelling
system would probably make them LOOK like seperate languages.

And Yiddish and Hebrew are definitely distinct languages, other than
using the same alphabet, Yiddish is definitely related to German, some
even say a dialect of it.  I don't know enough about Yiddish and German
to agree or disagree with the claim that it's a dialect of German.
