Indeed, Nik, a further point one might make is that all the dialects
of English have *some* vague and precarious mapping between graph and
phone, and while it is different for every dialect, it is about
equally good for any of them.  (Current English spelling doesn't
particularly represent RP any better than it represents Texan or New
Yorker, for example.)

Phoneticizing it would privilege one dialect over the others, or else
create, as you say, mutual unintelligibility.
