Point is, it's *useful* that written English is far more standardized
than spoken English -- it gives the language wider intelligibility.
People whose accents are virtually incomprehensible to each other can
read exactly the same thing. Phonetic spelling of English would kill
that useful quality.
One doesn't have to be an Ugly American to recognize this. Poor John
hadn't said anything arrogant.
Your attempt to avoid flaming (if flaming includes unjust attacks on
people's character) has failed. Try harder next time.
