Quite an intriguing change, really, from Latin which had subject
agreement, plus case, yielding free order, to earlier French with
neither (well, very little *phonetic* subject agreement), with little
freedom of order, to Colloquial French with subject-and-object
agreement, no case, but plenty of freedom of order
