There is a very comprehensive list of chess variants and other
chesslike games at http://chessvariants.com. It includes a
"piececlopedia" giving the names, origins, and powers of various chess
pieces, whether from the modern game, its relatives, its ancestors, or
artificial variants (congames? no, that sounds bad. artgames!).
Also, I neglected to include the chariot and soldier in the list of
Xiangqi pieces which have modern names equivalent to their ancient
Indian ones. (Xiangqi is one of my favorite games to play, although
I'm quite bad at it.)
