Or sometimes capitals were compromises, as with Tallahassee, Florida.
When Florida was acquired from Spain it was originally divided into two
territories, West Florida, with its capital in Pensacola, and East
Florida, with its capital in St. Augustine. When the Americans merged
the two territories, there was a period when both cities were used as a
capital, alternating each year, but then after a while, a new capital
was chosen which was in the middle. Of course, today, most of the big
cities of Florida are in the peninsula.

Same here, altho I think that 9th grade was my last year that we had a
specific "geography" class. But, geography was covered in some other
subjects, such as history.
