If you take the criterion of wordhood to be having an entry
in mainstream dictionaries, then in the case of the word
_conlang_, I think we are well on the way to witnessing its
birth as a mainstream, nonjargon word. I increasingly see
the word used outside this list by people who have never
subscribed to this list, and conlanging itself is becoming
more visible to the wider public, what with Klingon, the
Lord of the Rings films, and the tendency for all new sci-fi
films and TV series to have their own conlang, coupled with
the Web as a vehicle that makes it very easy for people to
find information about conlangs and conlanging. It is only
a matter of time before the word gets picked up by
lexicographers.
It's noteworthy, I think, that nobody invented the word
_conlang_. It slid gradually and unobtrusively into being.
