Not *galon, but *jalon exists in French, but with a very different meaning: milestone ;)) . And of course we do have gallon [ga"lO~] as a measurement unit, but I don't know if it's a reborrowing from English or the actual word stayed in French. and probably of Celtic origin before that, or at least
