X-Bar is pretty easy:
Take a sentence like:
We saw the man who John was talking to.
IP
----------
NP IP

We Infl VP

PAST V NP

who NP IP
| -----------
John AUXP VP
-------- ---------
Infl AUX V PP

That's just an example...I'm not sure on the verbs, I've seen alot of differing notations for them.
Unfortunately I can't recommend any books, since I've been looking myself.
Hopefully someone out there knows of some.
