Hm. I don't post much to this list, just listen. I'm a conlanger working on
a setting for an ongoing Space:1889 / Call of Cthulhu crossover universe;
my Sol system was monitored and maintained by creepy aliens, the Old Ones,
who set up the inner planets as labs with the Earth as a kind of wild set,
Venus as alternate wild set with deliberate genetic modifications of
animals, and Mars as an open lab (where the inhabitants knew they were
serving an alien race). Therefore, the planetary environments and creatures
were deliberately-built and maintained to be interchangeable.

About 5my before present, the Old Ones bailed. Evolution went wild; on
Earth, a series of mechanical failures led to a series of ice ages and on
Mars the atmosphere and water pumps slowly stopped working, leading to an
abrupt drying-out. The abrupt abandonment of the 'laboratories' meant that
the populations went wild: new animal lineages were born, artifically
maintained situations collapsed, and free Darwinian play led to
unconstrained evolution. The selected-for common hominid species broke into
local variants from the shared template known as the australopithecus
lineage; true Martians, Venusians, and Terrans quickly developed.

Now Terrans have taken to space in steamships ... and Terrans scientists
are piecing together the meaning of the strange ruins on Mars...
