You can also use everyone's favorite source of almost all information,
the internet. Dictionary.com searches a number of different options,
including a dedicated online etymological dictionary (originally from
http://www.etymonline.com) which often has discussions on the history
of the word instead of "? origin unknown" that most dictionaries do.
Of course, as with all basic reference tools, dictionary etymologies
aren't always accurate. Comparing results on dictionary.com often
actually gives different theories in the different sources; I suppose
another reason to recommend it.
