Maybe they're English (or other language) versions of the native names?
Like how my conlang Gáb-we is (or was) spoken as the official language of
(apostraphes = rising accent mark) Tí-Ér'-r'e (also spelled Tíég'), but i
usually just write it in English as "Tiere", since that's how it was
named by the people who drew up the geography for my LARP group.
