So what? As it happens, good writing style guides all say that the first
instance of an abbreviation in an article should be placed in brackets,
and preceded by the full un-abbreviated term. In addition, if there is any
possibility that a particular abbreviation might cause confusion despite
this, the style guides call for the full term to be used. Used properly,
there is no danger of an abbreviation causing confusion.

Of course, we could consistantly use the full term, but we can't have
that! There's more syllables that way! That'll slow down our thinking!
There's an opportunity for a cheap shot at Chinese here, but I'm not
inclined to take it. Those familiar with Chinese ought to know what it is
I am referring to anyway.
