It is. My pet theory is that it is derived from a medieval
abbreviated spelling rather than an actual contraction in
speech, since in the facsimile where I picked up my odd
spelling it was actually spelled _beñct_, with an abreviation
stroke over |enc|. It may of course have been the scribe's
way of showing off that he knew the Latin form. BTW the
name also occurs as _Bæncter_ complete with an Old Swedish
nominative ending. Let's all be glad that I didn't adopt
that spelling when I was 22!
